Would you like to make a special piece for your baby’s nursery, but don’t know where to start? Try this You are my Sunshine wall art! It’s easy and super cute.
I remember the times when I was expecting very well. I was scrolling down the Pinterest almost daily for ideas and inspiration and things I could make on my own for my little ones.
There is an endless amount of merchandise for babies these days. But I knew I wanted to make something instead of just buying everything at the store. You can find the few things that I actually handmade in this article.
I’d never got to make an art piece though. I’ve always thought I wasn’t skilled enough to create something worthy to put up on nursery walls. Turns out it’s not as difficult as one might think. With a bit of research and some spare time during my boys’ nap, I’ve recently made these You are my Sunshine wall art prints. And you can easily make them too!
Let me show you how.

A word before printing
If you are going to color, use watercolors or any other coloring method, I highly recommend using a heavy duty paper.
For a while now, I’ve been using the Southworth Linen paper for everything I want to keep a while. It is actually not an art paper, but I love the texture of it, like a LOT. It adds a whole other dimension to everything I print or make with it (I read it doesn’t work well with laser printers, however, so beware).
Anyhow, find some nice artsy paper with a bit of texture and thickness to it so your creation can last a while.
After your print your desired design, let the fun begin!
On a side note: If you don’t feel like painting or coloring these prints, they look pretty even in black & white!
How to give your personal touch to this you are my sunshine print
In the past few years, the adult coloring pages have been super popular. And it makes sense.
With our busy lives filled with technology and screens, there is something magical about the “old-style” paper and pencil, isn’t there?
Therefore, you can simply use colored pencils to bring these prints to life.
Here is an example of what I did.
How to do it:
1. Find three to four colors that go well together
2. Assign one color to each pattern and follow it throughout the whole design
And make sure to experiment! Use colors to match your nursery color scheme, even if they are blue or pink. Remember, you want to pour your personality and taste into this piece.
And here is my watercolor take on these:
I apologize for this awfully blue hue of the images, I’m not sure what happened to my camera when taking these!
How to use watercolor:
1. Use several layers of paint until the desired tone is reached
2. Slowly blend in another color or two
Remember, watercolors are meant to be sloppy and messy. No need to fit within the lines!
Coloring with pencils actually took me longer than using watercolors. I feel like with pencils you have to be so precise and stay within the lines of this particular piece for it to make sense.
Watercolors, on the other hand, allow me to be clumsy and they are very forgiving of the very little artistic ability I have.
Anyway, in the end, I was happy with both of the designs.
One more idea. I have recently stumbled upon these watercolor pencils that I can’t wait to try. They sound like a perfect combo for this kind of project.
Now all I need is to get a few white picture frames and hang them up in my boys’ room. Unfortunately, I only had black frames at hand, but they just don’t work with these, like at all.
Let me know if you give a try to my free printable nursery wall art and share some pictures when finished. I would love to see them!
